The top PAR sensor was 0.5 m below the water surface and the bottom one was at 1 m below the surface.
We evaluate the accuracy of LAI estimates derived from the analysis of PAR sensor data and the robustness of our sensor modification.
Solar radiation and wind speed were recorded using a photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) sensor (QS2, Delta-T Devices, Cambridge, UK) and a switching anemometer (A100R ,119 Vector Instruments, Rhyl, UK) respectively) All measurements were logged at hourly intervals.
Chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were measured with the Mini-Pam II system (Walz, Germany), quantum photon density and light homogeneity were tested by a PAR sensor equipped by Mini-Pam II.
Different volumes of lidar points for the locations directly above each photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) sensor were examined to determine if there is an optimal method of relating lidar returns to estimated fPAR values.
For the time intervals (< 2 h) when the spectroradiometer was used for underwater scans, the incident irradiance had to be interpolated with the help of a parallel running cosine-corrected PAR sensor (Li193SA, LiCor Inc., Lincoln, NE, USA) measuring surface irradiance continuously.

This paper presents a feasible, robust, and low-cost modification of commercial off-the-shelf photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) sensors, which significantly enhances the potential of Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) technology for non-destructive in-situ LAI assessment.
Each data point consisted of the mean of 10 adjacent PAR sensors spaced 1 cm apart along a 0.8 m transect, giving eight data points per transect.
The diurnal course of photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) was characterized at both sites with microstation dataloggers recording every 10 s (H21-002 connectod twotwo S-LIA-M003 PAR sensors, Onset, MA, USA).
Sensor models used were as follows: temperature and salinity (combined), 6360; dissolved oxygen, ROX™; chlorophyll a, 6025; pH, 6561; turbidity, 6136; under-water PAR, 2π quantum sensors (model: LI-192) by LI-COR® (LI-COR®, Lincoln, Nebraska USA).
