Cast SHS powders are obtained by mechanical grinding and dispersion of ingots of refractory compounds and corundum or heterogeneous systems consisting of two or more refractory compounds.
These results show that reaction of the catalyst with the support to form more refractory compounds greatly impact the nucleation yield and the growth selectivity of single-walled carbon nanotubes.
It appears that there is a moderate effect of TiO2 content in support on Ni and V hydrodemetallization (HDM) while hydrodeasphaltenization (HDAs) and hydrodesulfurization (HDS) activities were slightly improved when a partially hydrotreated feed, which contains more refractory compounds than virgin feedstock, was employed.
Reactions, such as addition of olefin free radicals (Gray and McCaffrey 2002), cross-linking between aromatic clusters (Habib et al. 2013), and bridging of aromatics by alkyl chains (Alshareef et al. 2011), were likely to be responsible for the formation of more refractory compounds.
However, the recombination of free radial species leads to addition reactions that result in changes to the chemical structures of the n-C7 asphaltenes and, therefore, result in heavier and more refractory compounds than the initial n-C7 asphaltenes (Alshareef et al. 2011; Habib et al. 2013; Sanford 1994).

HDS, the major technology in current industries not only operates in difficult and costly conditions but also is inefficient in removing the more refractory sulfur compounds such as benzothiophene (BT), dibenzothiophene (DBT), and 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (DMDBT) (Liu et al. 2012).
A curve fitting analysis of TPO GC profiles indicated that the carbonaceous compounds combusted below 680 K during TPO were observed on all the spent catalysts examined here whereas more refractory carbonaceous compound (combusted at around 690 K during TPO) was observed on the catalyst that had experienced severe HDS reaction conditions.
More refractory carbonaceous compound was preferentially observed on the catalyst charged near the outlet of the HDS reactor.
The sulfur compounds become more refractory with increasing boiling point, as the dominant compound class changes from thiols, sulfides, and thiophene in the naphtha to substituted benzothiophenic compounds in the distillate (Table 2) (Weast 1988).
NiMo catalysts are consequently more efficient for HDS of refractory compounds such as 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (DMDBT) (Bataille et al. 2000).
However, aromatic compounds are more refractory to crack than paraffinic feedstock because they are: (i) lower in H content and (ii) associated with low diffusion coefficients.
