"best matters" is correct and usable in written English. When used in the right context, it can be used to mean that something of the highest quality or importance is being discussed. For example: "The best matters must be carefully considered when making any major decisions."
Or at least semi-prestigious, depending on how you view being the best before being the best matters.
He's essentially saying that "first" doesn't matter, "best" matters.
