If so, the fixed sites and the sites at high frequency would correspond to the sites of high occupancy frequency in the original founders, and the polymorphic insertion sites (sites with low occupancy frequency) would correspond to more recent transposition events, as observed in colonizing species [26].
However, there is evidence for more recent transposition events.
They are clearly parts of ancient gene blocks, not the result of independent or more recent transposition events to the mammalian X chromosome, which is consistent with what we already know about the evolution of the eutherian X chromosome [ 14].
This suggests that Prom2-Kcnip3 initially belonged to the fourth Lbx paralogon that contains Fgf17-Npm2 as well as Dok2-Loxl2-Nkx3.1-Nkx2.6 genes, while the placement of Prom2-Kcnip3 on the same chromosome but at a distance to Lbx2 in humans, cattle and dog (but not mouse) is probably a result of a more recent transposition event.
Subsequent studies have classified the DINE-1 as a helitron, and have shown that there has been a more recent transposition and expansion of DINE-1 elements in D. yakuba and D. mojavensis, which results in the higher density of DINE-1 elements in these species.

Of the 1.7% of DR2 motifs (1740 in total) present in potentially mobile AluY elements, only 41 motifs were not found to be present in the chimp and rhesus macaque genomes [see Additional file 1], indicating that more recent AluY-mediated transposition was not a major driving force in shaping retinoid-regulated gene expression in the human genome.
Among the five more recent lineages, four seem to be still active (transposition events at time 0), which is expected for three of them that are characterized by numerous potentially active copies (2 stars).
If the 3' ends serve to initiate transposition, one might predict that more recent and active elements will have strong palindromes, but we detect no difference in d G ¯ between helitrons that are recent (i.e., polymorphic among individuals) and older (present in all assayed individuals).
This step can lead to different cases: 1) only one subfamily is detected, which is often the case when a LTR-RT family underwent a single recent transposition burst; 2) two or more subfamilies are detected, each one of them containing several copies; and 3) several subfamilies are defined but only one has multiple copies, whereas the remaining are single copy.
This conservation may be due to these transposon elements entering the two genomes by multiple transposition processes, or simply due to a more recent divergence from a common ancestor.
Peaks in the frequency distribution are interpreted as episodic events of transposition, with peaks associated with lower values of divergence representing more recent proliferation events.
