As a student in the 1930s, John Norris McArthur wanted a portable microscope to take on field trips.
The sampling resolution of this Nano-CT is down to 50 nm, which enables the microscope to take 1022 two-dimensional section images (Fig. 1b) with 1016 × 1024 pixels for one sample.
Now Peter Velikov and Siu-Tung Yau at the University of Alabama at Huntsville have used an atomic force microscope to take the first images of the birth of the seed crystals, a process called nucleation.
To map the roughly 1300 connections, or synapses, between the cells, researchers used an electron microscope to take millions of nanoscopic pictures from a speck of tissue not much bigger than a dust mite, carved into nearly 3700 slices.
"I used a macro lens and a microscope to take various images of a circuit board," Clark explains.
As their results were consistent in the evaluation of the above criteria, we decided to take advantage of the convenient operation of the conventional fluorescent microscope to take sufficient numbers of images required for the statistical analysis.
