Vacuolar processing enzymes (VPEs) are cysteine proteinases involved in the processing of vacuolar proteins and the maturation of seed storage proteins in plants (Haranishimura et al. 1991; Hiraiwa et al. 1993; Rojo et al. 2003; Wang et al. 2009).
The VPE family was originally identified as a group of processing enzymes responsible for the maturation of seed storage proteins in protein storage vacuoles (Haranishimura et al. 1991; Haranishimura et al. 1993).
Further, numerous A1 peptidases were also present which have been shown to be expressed in developing seed pods and be involved in the proteolytic processing and maturation of seed storage proteins in numerous plant species including rice [12] and additionally have proteolytic roles during water deficit stress [5].
VPEs are cysteine-type proteases which were originally discovered to be responsible for maturation of seed storage proteins.
However, the expressions of two other transcripts BCC04 and BC388C were firstly up-regulated after fertilization and then gradually decreased during the maturation of seed.
Understanding the adaptive and evolutionary significance of such TFFDMS and TFGMS repeat expansion/contraction in the functional domain and 5′ UTRs of TF genes, respectively, is of relevance that needs further systematic experimentation by assaying a large number of contrasting chickpea genotypes of different tissues and/or stages (embryogenesis to maturation) of seed development.

Plant growth, development and adaptation are consequences of cooperative and antagonistic actions of different regulatory hormones, starting from germination to the development and maturation of seeds.
The high monthly average temperatures (25 26°C) during the flourishing period and low rainfall level of 223 mm, result in an incomplete maturation of seeds and a decrease in oil content.
Class I members showed moderate levels of expression with almost no variation during development, and increased mRNA levels were observed in late maturation of seeds and senescence of leaves.
Variation within a taxon may depend on genetic differences, local weather during growth of mother plants and maturation of seeds, seed position on the mother plant, soil quality, or other naturally occurring factors.
It has been known for a long time that the death of soybean plants occurring soon after maturation of seeds can be prevented by depodding [ 22] or deseeding [ 23].
