In this study we have examined the utility of serological markers of malaria exposure to rapidly assess MTI in an area of northeast Tanzania.
Rapid diagnostic tests were used to check for parasitaemia in the 2008 household survey and will also be used to explore the feasibility of using immunological markers of malaria transmission levels to examine the association between transmission and net use.
In the present study, we have analysed serum samples from infected individuals to identify and characterize novel markers of malaria infection using 2-DE coupled with immunoblotting techniques and mass spectrometry analysis.
One potential explanation for this phenomenon is that higher P. falciparum density, lower hematocrit, and younger age are proxy markers of malaria naivety and hence poor immunity to both P. falciparum and P. vivax infections.
Here we present the results of a national malaria indicator survey in the Republic of Djibouti, the first in sub-Saharan Africa to combine parasitological and serological markers of malaria, to evaluate the extent of transmission in the country and explore the potential for elimination.
Poisson regression was used to determine whether LLITN (or ITN) and IPTp coverage rates for pregnant women, as markers of malaria control interventions, were associated with malaria incidence in children younger than five years of age, accounting for clustering by site.

Measurement of serum anti-malarial antibodies is a useful marker of malaria exposure that indicates long-term transmission potential.
Druilhe and others could not detect CSP antigens in children in low transmission area even though 78% of them had detectable blood stage antigens, and from these data, they concluded that CSP is not a reliable marker of malaria endemicity when the total EIR in the area is less than 10 infectious bites per person per year [ 28].
As a result, symptoms such as coma, convulsions, respiratory distress, pallor, and fever are sometimes interpreted as signs of a traditional illness, rather than markers of severe malaria infection.
Recent investigations have moved towards the inclusion of non-malaria febrile illness (NMFI) as a control group to investigate the specificity of markers for malaria infection.
Even though splenomegaly is one of the main clinical markers of endemicity of malaria in P. falciparum transmission areas [ 19], it is frequently absent during acute infection in non-immune subjects [ 7, 30].
