Metallic californium has been prepared and is structurally similar to metallic americium, curium, berkelium, and most lanthanoid metals.
Hydrogen is absorbed at high temperatures by many transition metals (scandium, 21, through copper, 29; yttrium, 39, through silver, 47; hafnium, 72, through gold, 79); and metals of the actinoid (actinium, 89, through lawrencium, 103) and lanthanoid series (lanthanum, 57, through lutetium, 71) to form hard, alloy-like hydrides.
It is probable, in a formal sense at least, that element 122 will begin another series of elements in which each successive electron is added to a deep inner orbital, in a manner similar (see figure) to that found in the lanthanoid and actinoid series.
Not every element of this new series would correspond to an actinoid (or lanthanoid) element on a one-to-one basis, and prediction of the chemistry of the members of the series is a complex problem.
Tantalum is chemically much like niobium because both have similar and because the radius of the tantalum ion is nearly the same as that of niobium as a result of the lanthanoid contraction.
That luminescing properties of a centre are strongly dependent on the symmetry of neighbouring ion groups with respect to the whole phosphor molecule is clearly proved by the spectral shifts of certain phosphors activated with lanthanoid ions, which emit in narrow spectral regions.

A useful compromise is to compress the period of 32 elements into 18 spaces by listing the 14 lanthanoids (also called lanthanides) and the 14 actinoids (also called actinides) in a special double row below the other periods.
A great deal is known about the lanthanoids, all but one of which occur in nature as stable isotopes.
Actinoids in the +4 oxidation state also are much alike (and also resemble the +4 lanthanoids).
The transition elements may be subdivided according to the electronic structures of their atoms into three main transition series, called the first, second, and third transition series, and two inner transition series, called the lanthanoids and the actinoids.
