But she also brought a joyous, daring quality to the City Ballet repertory, and her role in "Evenfall," which she originated at the ballet's premiere last year, exploits both sides of her dancing personality.
Of the new ballets, Mr. Wheeldon's "Evenfall" was the more interesting.
For all its deft spatial patterns and devotion to striking arm positions, "Evenfall" has always seemed somewhat hollow — not unfinished, but unfulfilled.
Only now do we see how each crossroads was bound to throw up not only a cross but a couple of gadabouts with goads, a couple of gadabouts at a loss as to why they were at the beck and call of some old crock soaring above the culch of a kitchen midden at evenfall, of some old crock roaring across the gulch as a hanged man roars out to a hanged man.
"Evenfall," set to Bartok's Piano Concerto No. 3 (finely played by Cameron Grant and conducted by Paul Mann), is an all gray, shimmeringly lighted moonscape in which Mr. Wheeldon creates memorable, puzzling images (sometimes evoking "Swan Lake") with a principal couple set against a his corps de ballet of 12 women in gray tutus and 6 men.
Ms. Weese's final performance the following night with City Ballet, in Christopher Wheeldon's "Evenfall," was a lovely conclusion to her memorable 14-year career with the company.
With no one available to conduct "Evenfall," Christopher Wheeldon's ballet set to Bartok's Piano Concerto No. 3, Cameron Grant played the entire composition on solo piano.
