For "An Icy Night" (1898), he made a carbon print that seems made of the sootiness of the moody blue crepuscule.
His work as a composer is central to his career, to his legacy, and to this set, which features five versions of "'Round Midnight," six of "Epistrophy," five of "Crepuscule with Nellie," four of "Rhythm-a-Ning," and multiples of "Jackie-ing," "Blue Monk," "In Walked Bud," "Well, You Needn't," "Straight, No Chaser," "Evidence," and other works in Monk's compositional canon.
The best are the Monk ballads "Ugly Beauty" and "Crepuscule With Nellie": slow and distorted, filthy and graceful.
A quartet under Mark Turner's name started an early set on Tuesday night at the Village Vanguard with some standards: Thelonious Monk's "Crepuscule With Nellie" and Bud Powell's "Dance of the Infidels".

The Guide boasted high production values and fine acting, but perhaps chose patriotism over good art, and the film was beaten to the national award by a charming and tender low-key documentary called Crepuscule by Valentyn Vasyanovych, set on a remote Ukrainian farm where nothing much happens.
