"aurora" is a correct and usable word in written English.
It is a noun and it typically refers to an atmospheric phenomenon that is characterized by the appearance of a stream of light in the night sky in the polar regions. You can use it in a sentence like this: "The aurora lit up the night sky over the Arctic."
