You don't set off fireworks without consequences in a work called "Zone of Silence".
The crests of one would coincide with the troughs of the other, creating a little zone of silence.
The troupe returns to New York to perform three pieces in repertory at La Mama, co-presented by the Public: "Zone of Silence," "Discover Love," and "Being Harold Pinter".
Rounding out the program are "Being Harold Pinter" and "Zone of Silence," both of which were critically praised when performed at the Public Theater's Under the Radar Festival in January.
The firecracker that is set off in the first seconds of the Belarus Free Theater's astounding "Zone of Silence," at La MaMa in the East Village, doesn't make much noise, at least not as measured in decibels.
Instead, Cubans pass around DVDs. Karel Ducasse, for example, has made about 500 copies of his 2007 documentary, "Zone of Silence," which is about censorship, to sell and hand out at festivals.
"We have a couple of ideas on the floor if they can make it," including adding performances of "Zone of Silence," another of the troupe's works, and having American theater and film celebrities present at shows as a gesture of support.
The Belarus Free Theater — which has not returned to its native country in the intervening months and seems unlikely to in the immediate future — is now back at La MaMa, where "Being Harold Pinter" runs in repertory with "Zone of Silence" and "Discover Love," through May 15.
