Capillary density in the infarct area of hearts transplanted with cardiogenin-activated MSCs 7 days post transplantation was on average 13±3 per HPF (Fig. 4e), whereas only 5±2 vessels per HPF were in the infarct zone of hearts transplanted with sham-pretreated MSCs.
Fluorescent images of immunostained heart sections showed strong signals for Bax and Noxa proteins in the infarct zone of the heart, with weaker staining in the non-infarcted myocardium, particularly for Noxa.
Interestingly, the percentage of donor cells that could be recovered from the infarcted zone of the heart was significantly higher than that from the spared myocardium or from control hearts, possibly linked to the different cytokines pattern expressions in CMCs exposed to ischemic injury.

At both embryonic day 13.5 and 14.5, the left and right ventricular free wall compact zone of transgenic hearts was thin when compared to hearts of non-transgenic littermates.
Patches were cultivated in vitro or transplanted in vivo to the infarcted zone of rat hearts after LAD-ligation.

In contrast, DDR2-positive CFs adjacent to damaged VCMs in the ischemic border zone of infarcted hearts stained positive for intracellular S100A1 (Fig 2 and Supplementary Fig S2B C).
