The sedimentary facies and facies associations show a downflow trend that can be subdivided into three distinct stages of flow development: (1) a zone of flow establishment (ZFE), (2) a zone of transition (ZFT), and (3) an established zone (ZEF).
The peripheral (faster) zone of flow coincided with the lamellipodial network of actin (Figure 1, arrowheads), while the more central (slower) zone encompassed the region of the cytoplasm containing stress fibers and commonly defined as the lamellum.

Zones of flow convergence facilitate flow acceleration and accumulative flow behavior, whereas zones of flow divergence facilitate deceleration and depletion.
GIS analysis of the plot microtopography showed that miniflumes located in the zones of flow convergence collected the majority of bacteria.
Kymograph analysis indicated that the flow velocity changed abruptly at the boundary between the two zones of flow (Figure 1A).
Thus, two zones of flow did not develop in the absence of FAs, suggesting that the boundary between these zones not only coincided with, but indeed depended on FAs.
Also consistent with our findings, sharp boundary between the two zones of flow was not observed in sea urchin coelomocytes cultured on polylysin-coated surfaces [10],, although inhibitor analysis revealed two different components of flow velocity.
Particularly in locations where the water table is high, such as depressions or zones of flow convergence, this process of trail degradation, avoidance, and braiding may become quite pronounced.
