A study of elderly subjects [13] demonstrated that sarcopenia, defined as appendicular skeletal muscle mass (kg/height2) less than two standard deviations below the mean of a young reference group, predicted self-reported physical disability in elderly men and women independent of other covariates such as age, obesity, ethnicity, and income level.
