The third youngest ramet behind the apex from each apical cutting, consisting of an un-rooted node and its attached internode, was dissected and the leaf was removed to avoid excessive transpiration and hence water loss and to remove potentially confounding effects of leaf photosynthesis (Fig. 2).
We searched for all marked ramets and counted the new ramets of each morpho-species.
In P. tenax, the number of ramets remained unchanged, as no new ramets were produced during the 54 days of the experiment and growth was limited to increasing size of existing ramets.
Recruitment (new ramets in 2006) and population change (total ramets in 2006) were modeled as a rate relative to the initial ramets per mat by using a Poisson distribution with a log link, and adding an offset of the log of the number of initial ramets in 2005.
Table 1 also reveals that no new ramets were formed in this species after the flooding treatments were imposed, nor did the maximum height of the ramets or the mean leaf length increase.
