Cued by Roger Ebert's tweet that yesterday would have been the eighty-eighth birthday of the poet Philip Larkin, I'm moved to revisit one of the more curious yet revealing aspects of his career: he was a jazz critic who hated modern jazz (i.e., bebop and beyond) and made no bones about it.
