In a more recent analysis, a set of 861 rice genes termed "Conserved Poaceae Specific Genes" that are evolutionarily conserved within the Poaceae family yet lack significant sequence similarity to non-Poaceae species was identified by searching the finished rice genome sequence against the genomic sequences from Arabidopsis, Medicago, poplar, and EST clusters from 184 plant species [ 16].
For example, intraerythrocytic P. falciparum is heavily dependent on antioxidant systems despite its almost totally fermentative lifestyle, yet it lacks significant antioxidant enzymes like catalase and glutathione peroxidase, which play major protective roles in mammalian cells (Müller, 2004; Vonlaufen et al., 2008).
CONCLUSIONS: This regimen lacks significant activity in this target population.
