"They feel so happy," said Carlos Canales, an organizer at the Workplace Project in Hempstead, which aids Latinos.
In Farmingdale, the Workplace Project, an advocacy group, has helped to turn a storefront into a community house.
The Workplace Project has been trying to help the laborers organize themselves under the umbrella of the United Day Laborers.
The Workplace Project and United Day Laborers of Long Island set it up, with Brookhaven Citizens for Peaceful Solutions.
"They're treated like disposable workers," said Carlos Canales, an organizer with the Workplace Project, which represents immigrant laborers here.
"Exxon Mobil is in a class by itself, and I don't mean that in a positive sense," said Deena Fidas, H.R.C.'s deputy director for the workplace project.
"It is often more a knowledge and will gap than a mechanics and cost issue," said Deena Fidas, deputy director of the Human Rights Campaign's workplace project.
"It very quickly became a litmus test among employees for how welcoming their firm was," said Daryl Herrschaft, director of the workplace project at the Human Rights Campaign.
It was while employed at the organization Ms. Gordon founded, the Workplace Project, that Ms. Jayaraman received the call from the Windows employees.
"Of all the houses in Farmingville to be firebombed, it is an extraordinary coincidence," said Nadia Marin-Molinas, executive director of the Workplace Project in Hempstead.
