The rationale behind this reorganization is that changes to the requirements of professional life must have a direct impact on the nature of the essential workplace competencies that have to be assessed.
The standards include not only occupation-specific competencies – what people need to know to perform a particular job – but also industry-sector competencies, industry-wide competencies, workplace competencies, academic competencies, and personal effectiveness competencies that make people more employable anywhere.
It identifies five groups of workplace competencies, including the ability to allocate resources (time, money, and facilities), interpersonal skills (such as teamwork, teaching others, and leadership), the ability to acquire and use information, understands systems, and works well with technology.
Sindell and her team surveyed more than 1,000 professionals on leadership qualities and in doing so found that, in their survey, women rated the effectiveness of other women lower 57% of the time for workplace competencies, compared to men at 14%.
