"I was working on a fusion reactor, but on a tiny little bit of a tiny little bit of it," he says.
Mr Gates has invested in a pioneering reactor fuelled by nuclear waste, while Mr Allen has a stake in a firm working on nuclear fusion".I'm trying to be a catalyst in all these different areas, looking over the horizon to see where things are going and pushing them through to fruition," he says.
"We were really surprised that a guy in Brooklyn was working on a fusion reactor – and he reached out to us and said without Shapeways, without the ceramic parts that you guys print for me this would never be possible for me to do," added Weijmarshausen.
Scientists have been working on taming fusion for decades.

Fusion requires incredibly high temperatures and pressures, which is challenging, and a lot of people have been working on fusion for a long time.
"Some key parts of the prototype are theoretical and not yet proven," Nathan Gilliland, CEO of General Fusion who are working on their own fusion reactor, told Wired.
"In terms of major products, Oracle is working on Fusion, a software suite that will combine the best features of Oracle's and its acquired companies' products," he says.
Although researchers have been working on inertial confinement fusion for more than 50 years, no device has yet achieved ignition.
Oak Ridge also serves as the main office for the U.S. team working on the international fusion project ITER, which is under construction in Cadarache, France.
