This study sought to determine the effects of direct exposure x-ray film speed and background density on observer assessment of endodontic working lengths and on perceived radiographic image quality.
We sought to compare digital images with radiographs for the perceived clarity of small endodontic file tips at 2 different working lengths, as well as for the visualization of periapical bone lesions.
The working lengths were approximated by using the ruler feature on the XDR digital radiography program.
The results of our cyclic fatigue testing are not consistent with previous studies which found differences between constructs with short and long plate working lengths [ 11, 12].
Rubber stoppers were adjusted on the thickest (16 gauge) and thinnest (24 gauge) needle up to 2 mm short of the working lengths measured with both needles positioned in place at the canal orifices.
Following occlusal access of the pulp chamber with carbide round burs of ISO size 010 and Endo-Z bur FG ISO 016 (Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland), the working lengths were determined by visualizing the tip of a #10K-file through the apical foramen of each tooth and subtracting 1 mm from the length of the file.
