A team of economists has now produced research that suggests there are clear links between workers' happiness and their productivity.
"There is an impressively strong link between workers' happiness and their productivity," says Andrew Oswald, professor of economics at Warwick University and an expert on the economics of happiness.
The data also showed a tight connection between managers' quality and workers' happiness: Employees with high-scoring bosses consistently reported greater satisfaction in multiple areas, including innovation, work-life balance, and career development.
He often drew on "well-being" data, which seeks to track workers' happiness, and proposed new "labor regulations for alternative work arrangements," said Betsey Stevenson, a Labor Department economist and member of the Council of Economic Advisers during the Obama administration.

Companies such as Google, Bank of America and Etsy are working to improve worker happiness or purpose, but challenges remain.
