The strange, beautiful music that ensues nods to the past – but with chanting, counting, spoken word, harmonising, sighing and all manner of other things thrown in, it sounds unlike most music you'll hear this year.
A pity: how amazing would it have been – in every sense of the word – to see Polly Harvey harmonising with Susan Boyle, Dizzee leading the choir with Cheryl Cole and Elbow swapping verses with JLS?
