This study demonstrated that risk stratification of patients with ARDS based on PaO2/FiO2 ratios recorded at ARDS onset or diagnosis (baseline) or measured without standardising PEEP and FiO2 after 24 h of usual care, is not clinically useful.
It also highlights that without standardising the definitions and methods of measurement of risk parameters and ensuring that all acceptable levels of these are calculated, taking weight into account, further research could be hindered by error and poor comparability between studies.
