It has been argued that because automatic action occurs without conscious awareness (Bargh, 1994), self-reports of automaticity are unreliable (Eagly & Chaiken, 1993; Sniehotta & Presseau, 2012).
In theory at least, the relationship between the inducer and the concurrent is automatic (for a detailed discussion of automaticity, see the lectures on Attention and Automaticity).
The research on automaticity includes the work on the automatic activation of stereotypes.
