The analysis classified the ICV and SPV (Fig. 1) as exhibiting complete visibility, visibility with hypoplasia, or lack of visibility [22].
A two-way mixed ANOVA with condition as the between subjects variable and visibility as the within participants variable showed a marginally significant main effect of condition, F 2, 40) = 3.10, p =.056, and a significant main effect of visibility, F 1, 40) = 6.47, p =.015.
By contrast, in the invisible condition, subjective visibility of target images was dramatically reduced due to masking (visibility 1: 56.6% ± 12.2%; visibility 2: 31.2% ± 7.1%; visibility 3: 14.3% ± 7.8%; visibility 4: 0.1% ± 0.04%) (Fig. 2a).
In the visible condition, subjects' visibility ratings indicated that target images were partly or clearly perceived (percentage of total trials: visibility 1: 3.5% ± 3.0%; visibility 2: 18.5% ± 7.5%; visibility 3: 37.8% ± 5.4%; visibility 4: 45.4% ± 9.4%).
Second, we found that body visibility has a significant effect on the effect of body size [body size × body visibility: F 1, 46) = 75.385, p <.001].
Interestingly, this effect of body visibility is independent of whether the participants experience ownership or not [body size × body ownership × body visibility: F 1, 46) = 0.207, p =.65].
