Although, in principle, the FACS selection should work such that a cell with expression level anywhere within the selection window has 100% probability to be selected, and 0% probability to be selected if the cell's expression is anywhere outside the selection window, it is unrealistic to assume that the boundaries of the selection window are so precisely defined in practice.
We then set the width of the selection window such that 5% of the cells have expression levels within the selection window.
