Whereas Fraser River steelhead trout and sockeye salmon migrate out of the Strait of Georgia quickly [46], Fraser coho historically spent their entire marine phase within the strait [27].
Texada and Lasqueti islands are the largest within the strait, which has a midchannel depth of 900 1,200 feet (275 370 m).
There are several volcanic islands within the strait, the most famous of which is Krakatoa, which erupted on August 27, 1883, causing a tsunami with waves as high as 125 feet (38 metres) that destroyed 300 towns and villages and killed about 36,000 people.
Although sea surface temperature measured within Bass Strait and Port Phillip Bay, was not significantly different across the three years during the breeding months (One-way ANOVA: F2,28 =0.71, P=0.5; F2,28=0.67, P=0.5; Table 1).
While the Tasmanian devil is only found in Tasmania, today its absence from mainland Australia is due to a recent extinction (<1000 years; [ 20]) and Tasmania was repeatedly connected to Australia during glacial periods through land bridges emerging within Bass Strait until 10,000 years ago [ 21].
It has survived despite the efforts of successive rulers and bureaucracies in Kabul to bring it within the strait-jacket of a modern nation-state, on the questionable assumption that the European construct of the nation-state was a summum bonum, a kind of political form of organization that is self-evident, a 'natural' culmination of all societies.
We sampled two stations within the Bering Strait along the border of the United States and Russia.
The black currawong (Strepera fuliginosa), also known locally as the black jay, is a large passerine bird endemic to Tasmania and the nearby islands within the Bass Strait.
In total, 1,002 samples were collected from five geographic areas within the Bering Strait: Point Barrow, Kolyushin, Wrangel Island, Commander Island and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy (Figure 2).
Hydrothermal activity is currently known to occur within the Bransfield Strait [ 41, 45], along the East Scotia Ridge [ 46], Pacific-Antarctic Ridge [ 47], Australian-Antarctic Ridge [ 48], and within Kemp Caldera [ 49], and to support unique vent ecosystems distinct from those of the main mid-ocean ridge systems [ 43].
