For extinctions, the per-taxon rate (rE) represents the number of taxa becoming extinct (NFL+NbL) divided by the total number of taxa (NTOT) within one interval.
Thereby, the origination rate (rO) is calculated as the number of originating taxa (NFL+NFt) divided by the total number of taxa (NTOT) within one interval.
Thus, there seems to be a correlation between the number of originations and the number of extinctions, however, not within one interval but rather with a slight delay in the peak of extinction following the origination.
We calculated the probability of two NCO events occurring within the four intervals in which we observed clustered NCO by rescaling the genetic distances of 100 kb surrounding these regions as reported in the LD-based map.
