Multineuronal activation patterns containing stimulus specific information evolve on a continuum of different timescales, with time constants ranging from 1 5 ms up to >100 ms. We propose that this flexibility with respect to the use of different timescales allows the visual cortex to represent the spatiotemporal dynamics of stimuli with high fidelity.

To use the language of animal learning theory, every stimulus can be thought of as a "conditioned stimulus," although in some cases the "conditioning" has occurred over evolutionary timescales (in which case a stimulus would be genetically "hard-wired" and could be described as "unconditioned" with respect to the lifetime of an individual).
It was demonstrated that this process occurs by the revolution of one ring with respect to the other to give an intermediate five-coordinate species (terpy,dpp-[ 159-Cu II]).[ 144] In comparison to many related coordination complexes, the process is relatively fast, with the ligand rearrangement occurring on the timescale of tens of seconds.
Based on the above arguments and the fact that even small costs are significant over evolutionary timescales, we expect there to be a large number of environments in which our findings would hold despite this effect, but it illustrates that with respect to the clinical view on this fundamental problem, more detailed case-by-case analyses will be required.
