The lactic acid-producing strain (i.e. SAW041) harbors a lactate dehydrogenase, ldh, from Lactococcus lactis, and a pyruvate kinase from Enterococcus faecalis, each under control of the strong constitutive promoter, trc2, with additional expression of the lactate dehydrogenase from an exogenous plasmid [ 32] (see " Methods"; Additional file 1: Table S1).
