1906 Hollerith Type I Tabulator (Type 090) Automatic feed; metal cabinet; first wiring panel.
As you can see in the Type III photo above, these tabulators had a fixed wiring panel, requiring the machine itself to be rewired for every new job, keeping it idle for extended periods.
He also invented the first automatic card-feed mechanism, the first key punch, and took what was perhaps the first step towards programming by introducing a wiring panel in his 1906 Type I Tabulator, allowing it to do different jobs without having to be rebuilt!
Starting in 1906, tabulators were made more flexible by addition of a wiring panel to let users control their actions to some degree, thus allowing the same machine to be sold into different markets (government, railroad, etc) and used for different purposes.
