Yet despite their northerly range, outside the breeding season turnstones are one of the world's most widespread birds, travelling along all the major coastal flyways as far south as Patagonia, South Africa, Tasmania and New Zealand.
In contrast, richness in widespread birds, understorey plants and trees increased along this gradient.
