So how are normal cells, which are part of a strict tissue organization with cellular social cues, transformed into cellular sociopaths who disregard tissue order and ignore cellular dialog?
There was not a significant difference in the overall decrease in AMH levels in women who had tissue removed by LEEP versus their age-matched controls who had no tissue removed; however, more subjects from the LEEP group had a notable decrease in AMH levels (>9.9%) compared to No LEEP subjects (12 versus 9) (Table 2).
Additional evidence came from experiments conducted by marine ecologist Drew Harvell of Cornell and other researchers, who took tissue from sick sea stars, filtered out everything larger than viruses, and injected the tissue into apparently healthy sea stars.
But the agency does not set standards for donor age or health, and does not limit how long after death tissues may be procured, nor does it set minimum training standards for people who recover tissue.
"This is really good news for all the other young women who have tissue stored," she said.
"Most surprising to me is that we have patients who have tissue that is active more than 10 years after the transplant".
One of the people she wrote about was a Tulane medical school student who donated tissue from his own tumor to study a rare form of cancer that had afflicted him.
After the death of a young man who received tissue during routine knee surgery at a hospital in Minnesota in 2001, federal officials discovered that the implant was tainted with bacteria, leading to a fatal infection.
Recent progress suggests that engineered tissues may have an expanded clinical applicability in the future and may represent a viable therapeutic option for those who require tissue replacement or repair.
"It can take a month for the limb to regenerate," says Ashley Seifert, who studies tissue and organ regeneration at the University of Florida.
