They've been seen as a betrayal by many more liberal minded readers who thought Han Han was on their side, and most damning, they've drawn praise from conservative government commentators.
"A handful of Han attacked Uighurs and there were a handful of Uighurs who attacked Han... this handful of violent elements has been caught by the police and now the situation has been quelled," the local Communist Party chief, Li Zhi, said.
The unrest in Tibet was started by gangs of Tibetans who targeted Han Chinese.
Buddhist practitioners who are Han, the dominant ethnicity in China, live alongside Tibetans in the settlement, which is a winding 16-hour drive from the provincial capital, Chengdu.
It described several defendants, all with Uighur names, who attacked Han residents as they drove or bicycled through the city, bludgeoning and stoning them.
The diver who died, Han Ju-ho, did not regain consciousness despite the efforts of colleagues who were trying to revive him in a decompression chamber on board the United States Seventh Fleet's rescue vessel Salvo, officials said.
"His questions are ones that no one has addressed using neuroimaging," said co-author Gary Glover, a Stanford professor of radiology, neurosciences and biophysics who advised Han on the analyses.
Initially published in South Korea, the collection has now been translated into English by Deborah Smith, who with Han Kang won the 2016 Man Booker international prize for the translation of The Vegetarian.
Although administrators had not articulated the reasons behind the protests or the restrictions, Ms. Yao, an international trade major who is Han, described the rallies as a "rebellion" — evidence that the official propaganda has been somewhat effective.
Several parents, including those who are Han Chinese, have come along to the camp, to learn alongside their children.
