Wall Street was also weaker while continental bourses sold off sharply after Friday's record $2tn of losses on global stock markets.
The FTSE has been up by around 1% all day, while the French and German bourses are almost 2% higher.
Stocks in Frankfurt closed down 0.94percentt, while the Paris bourse ended down 1.13percentt.
The Turkish stockmarket rose 13.8%, while the Greek bourse rallied 10.1% to an all-time high.
Earlier, shares of Aventis rose 90 cents, or 1.4percentto to 63.9 euros on the Paris bourse while Sanofi shares rose 90 cents, or 1.7percentto to 54.4 euros.
In continental Europe, the bourses retained ownership of their domestic clearing and settlement organisations, while the banks owned the two international bodies that handled cross-border business, Euroclear and Clearstream (formerly Cedel).
At the moment, they oversee Germany's eight bourses: the government of Hesse keeps an eye on the Frankfurt stock exchange, for example, while Baden-Württemberg watches over the bourse in Stuttgart.The French too are talking about merging their regulators.
The smaller Milan and Madrid bourses also plan to join the alliance.
Other European bourses were affected by the gloomy mood.
Lisbon and Athens followed most European bourses lower.
