South of the wide, deep Gironde estuary, the Bay of Biscay coast is lined by enormous sand dunes, behind which are shallow lagoons.
The Gulf is vulnerable to very high WBT because regional weather patterns mean it has clear summer skies, allowing the sun to strongly warm the waters of the Gulf, which are shallow and therefore heat up more than deeper oceans.
Large areas of the western part of the region are also covered by "pans," which are shallow and ephemeral lakes, often with salty crusts; these are found especially in several provinces in South Africa.
