Plus, he is, as he admits in the essay, a little off when he characterizes certain matters of contemporary coolness; he doesn't seem to know, for example, that every hipster kid halfway worthy of the name is in Berlin right now, not Paris.
For instance, he rejects birtherism, the contention that Obama was born in Kenya and is hence not an American citizen; but he replaces it with a back-door, or metaphorical, birtherism when he characterizes Obama as an alien being, as a fifth-column party of one who has pretended to be an American, and technically is one, but really is something else.
Even Mr. Knittle, who in one show played Bill Clinton singing "Go Away Little Girl" to Ms. Hatch's Monica Lewinsky, echoes the movie's take when he characterizes Mr. Cilman's musical taste: "Whatever we told our kids to turn down or turn off, he gives us".
The attentive reader of TMS will have noticed this earlier: when he characterizes propriety as lying between the excess and defect of passion (27), for instance, or when he distinguishes the restraint of appetite out of self-interest from the virtue of temperance (28), or when he emphasizes habit (152, 324), or the superiority of friendships of virtue over friendships of pleasure (224 5).
It is the task of philosophy to identify these a priori principles in all the different spheres of culture, including politics, biology, art, history, etc. Helmuth Plessner captures metaphorically the spirit of Neo-Kantianism when he characterizes the Neo-Kantians as "botanists in the garden of the a priori" (Plessner 1974, 185).
