Further analysis of the list of TNFα-regulated, MEK/ERK-dependent genes – whose products are found in the extracellular space – indicated that some of these genes were significantly categorized by the molecular function of their protein products into categories that included hyaluronic acid binding activity (including Agc1 and Hapln1) and proteinase activity (including Mmp-9 and Mmp-12).
