The phrase "were marred by" is correct and commonly used in written English.
It is usually used to describe a situation or event that was negatively affected or spoiled by something. Example: The beautiful wedding ceremony was marred by the unexpected arrival of a storm, forcing the guests to move indoors for the reception.
