From a more philosophic point of view, wellbeing is sometimes distinguished in two basic forms: a "hedonic" form representing the sum of an individual's positive affective experiences (Ryff et al. 2004), and a deeper "eudaimonic" form that results from striving toward meaning and a noble purpose beyond simple self-gratification (Ryan and Deci 2001).
If any of them drops the ball, patients' wellbeing can be compromised, sometimes fatally.
