As far as information derived from publications in scientific journals is concerned, there are now a number of well established databases in the public domain (e.g. ChEMBL [1]) that have widespread use when looking at compound target interactions.
Firstly, despite a comprehensive literature search in three well established databases independently conducted by two reviewers, and careful cross referencing, we cannot exclude the possibility of having missed a relevant study.
However, the use of Linked Data to distribute and provide access to public biological data and several well established databases provide their own points of RDF information access (SPARQL endpoints) (19, 27, 28).
This allows WholeCellSimDB to take advantage of well established relational database frameworks to provide researchers searching and sorting capabilities and a Web-based graphical interface not present in SDCubes.
