Well designed projects conclude in a public product that may make a community contribution and allow young people to experience the benefits of service.
With the practitioner paired with an academic partner, this activity was maximally efficient and supported by an internal bidding process that, through detailed feedback and mentoring, ensured well designed projects.
Due to human imposed environmental modifications, risk of malaria has been predicted to increase in East Africa [ 13, 14]; on the other hand, well designed water projects are taught to economically benefit the residents of the dams vicinity and enable the community to strengthen the disease control programmes to overcome the adverse health effects [ 15, 16].
We believe that an immediate consequence of such a high level of collaboration on the part of schools, parents and pupils shows that if projects are well designed with adequate precaution, education centres can be places for obtaining samples of sufficient quality to substitute simple random samples based on census, thus saving resources.
Our experience in reviewing submissions to a research ethics board also shows that most of the pilot projects are not well designed: i.e. there are no clear feasibility objectives; no clear analytic plans; and certainly no clear criteria for success of feasibility.
