Norwegian Cruise Lines announced last month that it had bought the old S.S. United States, the country's last great ocean liner and now a flaking hulk tied up in Philadelphia, and plans to make it one of five American-flagged ships it will put into service, starting in July 2004, in a new cruising niche: service strictly between United States ports.
This year, the company also will put into service the Hebridean Spirit, which will accommodate up to 78 passengers and cruise between Norway and the Maldives.
