"We've definitely noticed a drop-off in the kind of mega-gifts that marked philanthropy during the boom years," Ms. Palmer said.
"Over the past year, we've definitely noticed an increase both in the number of these hotels opening and also the number of bookings for them," says Andrew Warner, senior director of marketing at Expedia.
KW: Have you done any work to find out why it is so successful in the UK? EW: No, but we've definitely noticed the UK has exploded for us recently.
He said: "While out on patrol in recent weeks we have definitely noticed an increase in the number of life rings going missing.
"We are definitely noticing companies saying, 'We don't have a sense of what our budgets are going to be,' " Kennedy said.
