I think the way we are does make us slightly easier to manage.
But what I think Kierkegaard meant was similar to another of his famously controversial theses, that "subjectivity is truth": what we value, what we love, what makes us who we are, does not exist in the world of ordinary truth and falsehood, of facts and objectivity.
Yet we also, on some level, know that the core of who we are does not die.
From a psychological point of view, odd-jobbing is a great way to reinforce that who we are does not have to equal what we do for work.
