"It's pretty obvious to water efficiency people that they're big water wasters".
These days, the research and projects Dodd works on all relate to water efficiency.
"Generally, people are generally aware of energy efficiency, but when it comes to water efficiency, it is looked at as a separate issue," Mr Tucker told BBC News.
"Energy Star clothes washers are at least 25percentt more efficient than the standard product and meet water efficiency requirements, which also helps save energy," she said.
Focussing on water efficiency does not make you positive; it makes you efficient – that's all.
In December, its WaterSense program – the water efficiency counterpart to its Energy Star label, which alerts consumers to energy-efficient appliances – drafted new specifications for flushometer toilets.
"Thames Water was impressed with our water efficiency policy," said a spokeswoman.
The development will include optimal water efficiency measures such as grey-water and storm runoff capture.
The commercial sector has also been addressing water efficiency with various approaches.
Jacob Tompkins is the managing director of Waterwise, an NGO that promotes water efficiency.
