Californians today consume roughly a quarter less water per capita than they did two decades ago, while irrigation innovations have allowed growers to achieve greater crop yields without additional water — progress that was prodded along by three previous droughts.
Despite substantial achievements in providing safe water, progress in sanitation and hygiene across Viet Nam is still lagging, especially in rural areas, where 70 per cent of the country's 88 million inhabitants live.

In the area of water much progress has been made and in 2012 the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme for Water Supply and Sanitation (JMP) announced that the world had already met the MDG water target in 2010.
Although Viet Nam has made substantial achievements in water supply, progress in sanitation and hygiene is still lagging far behind, especially in rural areas, where 70 per cent of the country's 86 million inhabitants still live.
"While the world is on track to meet its safe water targets, progress on basic sanitation, in terms of the number of people who need to gain access to sanitation facilities each year for the first time, needs to accelerate by at least 58 per cent between now and 2015 to meet the Millennium target," said UNICEF Executive Director Ann M. Veneman.
