In 2012, recycling and composting of municipal waste together accounted for more than 50% of waste treated in Germany (65% of waste treated), Austria (62%) and Belgium (57%).
But the city's director of municipal utilities, Vicky L. Murphy, pointed out that drilling waste amounted to less than 1 percent of all the waste treated at the plant.
The highest shares of municipal waste landfilled were recorded in Romania (99% of waste treated), Malta (87%), Croatia (85%), Latvia (84%) and Greece (82%), and of incinerated municipal waste in Denmark and Sweden (both 52%), the Netherlands (49%), Belgium (42%), Luxembourg (36%), Germany and Austria (both 35%), Finland (34%) and France (33%).
Observing the treatment methods separately, recycling was most common in Germany (47% of waste treated), Slovenia (42%), Ireland (37%), Belgium (36%), Estonia (34%), Denmark and Sweden (both 32%), and composting in Austria (34%), the Netherlands (26%), Belgium (21%), Luxembourg (19%), Germany and the United Kingdom (both 18%).
The ban, which goes into effect on Thursday, will require an estimated 12,200 recreational and small commercial vessels to dispose of their sewage, mainly human waste, treated or not, at government-run or privately operated pump-out stations along the coast.
However, landfill operations generate less waste per tonne of waste treated than other waste treatments methods.
A survey of waste treating biogas plants in north-eastern Germany showed that twelve out of fifteen biogas producers reported foam formation in their biogas reactors [3].
Most of the published studies analyzed agricultural AD plants; if waste treating plants were investigated, only a few AD components were monitored as summarized by Dumont et al. [10].
The activated sludge process is the most widely applied biological treatment of liquid waste, treating both municipal sewage and a variety of industrial wastewaters (Aguilar-López et al. 2013; Sotomayor et al. 2001; Slater 2006).
House Democrats are using this as an opportunity to agitate for an overhaul on foam waste, treating the issue as an analogy for the majority's view on environmental issues more broadly.
"On Earth, you open the tap, drink water, produce waste, treat the waste, and discharge it back into the ocean," he explains.
